We Are Expecting…

We Are Expecting...A Doll!Anna has been keeping secrets from me, the shame of it.

She mentioned recently that she had placed an order sometime ago with Alice’s Collections (see Doll Owner's Corner: Waiting).  She made the choice to keep silent about it even to me, that is until last night while she was checking the status of her purchase.

I was incredibly stunned at hearing such news, and I’m sure you will be too so I shall reveal it carefully.

The item my dear human purchased was order during the first week of January and was finally shipped out early last week from China.  It very quickly traveled to our country and we have received word that it has arrived within our home state last night.  We are expecting it’s arrival anytime now.

And now, the item that is being delivered into our care is…

Doll Family A, Ding Ding, 43 cm Ball Jointed Doll

A doll!

Anna purchased a new doll for us to raise, and now we are waiting to welcome her home.

That’s right, we are expecting a new doll.  I purchased a Doll Family A MSD sized doll, about the same size as Hikaru.  And like Hikaru, I bought her blank so she will arrive with out any paint, clothes or hair.

And yes, I somehow kept all this a secret from Hikaru, despite all the hints I dropped (see Is There a New Doll?).

With how long it took for this doll to be shipped out, and because I chose air mail for shipping, I’m a bit surprise that she’s already so close to home.  I haven’t even made her a new outfit yet.  But we will manage somehow.

It is quite a speedy delivery, and I am so vexed at Anna for not telling me about all this sooner.  I have not enough time to prepare.

She will need proper clothing to wear, since Anna is unprepared I suppose she can borrow something of mine.  And the poor thing will need a place to rest after her long journey.  And a name, we must come up with a suitable name for her.  So much to ponder on.

A Little News

A Little Doll Blog NewsJust a few small announcements for today.

First up, I have persuaded Anna to add  two new pages to this blog.  The first is a profile page,  to give my visitors a brief overview of who I am and what not.  I allowed Anna free reign over the description, so I’m afraid she added a bit too much information.  I mean why in the world would anyone need to know my measurements?

The second new page is quite remarkable.  It’s a directory for various doll-related sewing and craft tutorials.  Anna has found many such resources all over the internet.  Being such a generous and sympathetic doll, I thought it would be wonderful to offer up such useful information to doll owners who may be in need.

Okay the reason for her measurements is in case someone might need to know for the sake of comparison.  Like say I post a pattern for an outfit that fits Hikaru perfectly.  Someone might need to know how closely it will fit their own ball jointed doll.  Or someone may just be curious because they are interested in buying a doll.

As for the directory, Hikaru wasn’t originally on board with the whole idea.  Mostly because she misunderstood what I meant by a “directory” and what it would involve.  Once she understood she insisted that I drop what I was doing and start working on it immediately.

Anyway, both pages are up and ready to view and will be regularly updated as needed, mostly likely by me.  Enjoy!

Doll Owner’s Corner: Waiting

Doll Owner's Corner: WaitingFirst of the month, time for another Doll Owner’s Corner.  When I, the doll owner, get to discuss anything I want without any bjds getting in the way.

This month’s topic:

Waiting

And waiting, and waiting.  You see I made a doll related purchase online from Alice’s Collections.  It’s a shop that Hikaru is quite fond of, they are on her wish list quite a bit after all.

Anyway, I’m not going to say what I bought from them yet so as to not ruin the surprise but it is made to order as with most of the items sold by Alice’s Collections.  This of course means it takes extra time to get it.  I also ordered it as part of their Christmas sale which means cheap prices for me but many orders to prepare for them.  Not to mention that it was right before the Chinese New Year, did I mention that Alice’s Collections is based in China?  So yeah, a national holiday to further slow things down.

So this basically means that I have been waiting a heck of a long time to receive my purchase, even just to hear news that it has shipped which it hasn’t.  This actually isn’t that unusual a thing in the world of ball jointed doll collecting.  The dolls themselves are usually made as ordered and take forever to come depending on which store/dealer you get them from, which company makes them and of course the season.

With Hikaru, the wait was minimal because I ordered her from the Junky Spot.  Their main selling point is that all the dolls and accessories on their website are in stock and ready to ship.  So if you order a doll or wig from them, it’s shipped almost immediately and will likely arrive within a week depending where you are.  But what if what they have in stock is not quite what you want?  You either wait for them to stock something else or order from another shop and wait, wait, wait for your doll or whatever to come.

So what does one do when waiting for their dolly stuff to arrive?  If it’s an actual doll, you pass the time by gathering all the clothes and other items you will need when it finally arrives.  And if you have already done all that or if you are waiting for things like accessories?  You distract yourself with other activities (like crafts and blogging) or you commiserate with others.

I’ve been turning to videos for this.  Seems like I find videos for everything.  Here are a couple that are great for waiting.  I may have linked to them before, but they are worth mentioning again.

Enjoy, and may all your dolls and doll related items ship quickly and arrive safely.

Traveling with Dolls: Bjd at Church

Traveling with Dolls: Bjd at Church

On Easter Sunday, Anna decided to allow me to accompany her to church.  Finally, a chance to explore someplace new.

Sadly, Anna was too distracted by her other obligations to notice that I was still trapped in my carry bag during the church service.  I was able to still hear the beautiful music and bits of the sermon.  And afterwards I was able to spend some time exploring at my leisure.

A Bjd in Front of a Church Organ

Here I am in the Sanctuary, very spacious indeed.  Behind me is the rather grand sized pipe organ.  I have heard it is among the largest ones in the state of Arizona.  Quite large in size and frankly in volume as well.  I had no problems hearing it’s melodies despite being confined in my carry bag.

Ball Jointed Doll sitting on a balcony.

Still nice to admire from afar.  I had an excellent view of it sitting at the balcony.  Naturally I was careful not to get too close to the edge, a fall from that height would be disastrous indeed.

Church pews

I had a wonderful view of all the pews as well as the organ.  Yes, plenty of room for a large number of church going humans.

Bjd sitting in a church pew

I found the pews to be spacious, possibly a bit too spacious, but that is to be expected for dolls of my size.

I also couldn’t help noticing how dim the lighting was, at least on the balcony.  It made it most difficult to properly capture my radiance in photos.  Difficult, but thankfully not impossible.

Ball jointed doll with a Hymnal

Also thankfully, it wasn’t too dim to read from the hymnal, a must during church services.  Although I found it difficult for other reasons as you can see.

A ball jointed doll and lillies In honor of Easter, the sanctuary was nicely decorated with these lovely though unfortunately fake lilies.  Anna insisted on getting some photos of me posing with them.  They would make a lovely holiday card she insisted, so I relented.  You can view it here if you haven’t had a chance to yet.

A bjd sitting on an altar

I decided to explore a little more and discovered the chapel just down the hall from the sanctuary.  It is normally used for the smaller later service, but was vacant due to the holiday.

A ball jointed doll sitting on an altar

Such a quaint room, a bit more brightly lit, and with a modestly decorated altar.  I am quite fond of the beautiful cross set up in the center.

A ball jointed doll standing next to a cross

It is only slightly taller than myself and the design is simply rendered but elegant.

A ball jointed doll sitting on a piano.

Since this church is fairly known for it’s music program, it seemed natural to find a charmingly well used piano in the chapel.

A bjd trying to play a piano.

I’m afraid I haven’t had the opportunity to learn to play.  Most pianos you see are too wide to be played well by a single ball jointed doll, not even one as graceful and agile as myself.  Pity, I would have loved to fill the room with music.

Having drinks with a ball jointed doll.

After church, Anna and I attended a small fairly casual celebration with some of Anna’s acquaintances.  There was food prepared and various drinks, mostly alcoholic which I can’t say I entirely approve of.  Anna was sensible enough to choose water, and she was also considerate enough to remember to bring my tea set.

The time spent was pleasant enough, despite random people touching me or making overly blunt comments.  They clearly have not spent nearly enough time around dolls with my charm and splendor so are ignorant of proper behavior.  So being a patient and understanding doll, I will overlook it, for now.

The church I attend is First United Methodist Church in Mesa Arizona, check it out when you get the chance.

I originally thought it would have been too much trouble to take Hikaru to church, but decided it would be too much fun not to.  Plus there were several people I know who hadn’t seen her yet or at least hadn’t seen her since she finally got a wig (see It's Here at Last! Or a Wig Review).  Sadly some of those people weren’t at church this week.

Anyway, it was fun taking pictures and showing her off, both at church and later.  Those “blunt comments” Hikaru mentioned are actually just the usual comments one can expect from people seeing a ball jointed doll.

Some people think they are a little creepy or just a tad bizarre, mostly in a good way too as strange as that is to say.  I tried to tell Hikaru this because Miss “patient and understanding” was actually a little more steamed than she lets on.  People did say nice things about her too which I reminded her.

And technically only one person actually touched her, just out of curiosity about what she was made out of, and this was mostly because I forgot to warn anyone about that or about having clean hands.  No harm came from it, and I brought Magic Erasers (see Doll Owner's Corner: Weird Supplies for Dolls) just in case.  Overall, nothing to make too much of a fuss about.

Alright, maybe I was the tiniest bit heated by the comments.  And I really wish Anna would remember that one of her responsibilities of being the caretaker of ball jointed dolls does involve educating others on proper handling and decorum.

Anyway, I found my visit to church pleasant though rather brief, this time at least.  And the after activities were still delightful.  I enjoyed myself and look forward to many more adventures later.  I am at peace.

Ready to Depart

Anna has insisted time again that the only reason she doesn’t take me with her on her excursions is because we are lacking in an appropriate bag to carry me safely to her destination.  Well now there is no such excuse.

Lacey Purple Doll Carry Bag

Behold!  My custom made doll carry bag, crafted with care.

As Anna mentioned here on her own blog,  my bag is made from the same pretty lilac fabric as her everyday tote bag as well as other forms of daily luggage she has sewn.

It seems to resemble the shape of what I’ve heard some refer to as a “duffle bag”, but I assure you that it is the optimum shape for dolls such as myself.  Anna said she was inspired by this well-crafted tutorial for a doll bag.

Inside View of Lacey Purple Doll Carry Bag

Anna made my bag with plenty of storage space for any articles of clothing and other necessities I will need on our travels together.

Bjd lying in new carry bag

Inside the bag it is a fairly spacious and comfortable fit, though I suppose it could be improved somewhat.  Maybe the addition of a few soft cushions will be of benefit to me.

Still it will do nicely, for the time being.  I cannot help but admire the lace trim, it is the same used for my red violet sun dress (see Of Bjd Fashion: Dresses to Sew and a Tutorial) that I love so dearly.

Speaking of lace trimmed clothing, Anna also made me a lovely set of travel wear.

A light weight jacket with a matching skirt, both made from the same lilac fabric and trimmed with the same wonderful lace.  Pity that Anna made a slight error when constructing the sleeves.  They are quite narrow which makes for a flatteringly slim look, but rather difficult to put on.

Still, the two pieces coordinate beautifully with my carry bag.  Yes, I am definitely traveling in style.

So now the question is, where are we going?  And when?

???

That is a good question.  Any thoughts on where to take a ball jointed doll?  Please comment with any ideas you may have.

Doll Owner’s Corner: Vintage Clip Art

Time for another Doll Owner’s Corner, where I, the doll owner, get to talk about anything I want without Hikaru interrupting.

This month is about clip art, vintage clip art to be exact.

I love vintage images to decorate on my own blog, and occasionally used them here too.  Most of the images I use I get from The Graphics Fairy.  You can find tons of images for free there in just about any topic, including dolls.  That’s what it’s all about right?

So here are a few vintage images involving dolls that I found at the Graphics Fairy.  They have tons more so be sure to check them out later.

Of Bjd Fashion: Dresses to Sew and a Tutorial

This post may contain affiliate links, please check out my disclosures page.  Thanks!

Anna has been sewing doll clothes again.  Not specifically for myself, though she did make me a lovely new dress so I have no cause for complaint.

A 1/4 scale ball jointed doll and an Ever After High fashion doll wearing matching dresses made using this sewing tutorial.

It was for this sweet little doll.  I present Cerise Hood.  She is an Ever After High doll that belongs to Anna’s dear little niece.  Anna’s niece has similar fashion dolls that are all lacking in appropriate attire.  Since today is the child’s birthday, Anna decided to remedy the situation.  She discussed this here on her own blog.

Anna was generous enough to create a video tutorial, showing the world how to make these quaint little dresses.  I have decided to add it here so my wonderful readers will be able view it and perhaps find it useful.

It mostly features my new friend, but I do make an appearance.  Hence why Anna was gracious enough to make a new dress for me.

Updated 1/7/2018:  Anna created an alternate version of the video tutorial for people who are short on time.  It takes about 15 minutes to view instead of of 30 minutes.

I do quite like it.  It fits me like a glove, and the lace detail and simple bow are a lovely yet subtle addition.  It is a tiny bit bare which makes it perfect for a nice lazy Summer day.  However, I shall require more layers for the current weather.  Maybe a lovely new blouse to wear underneath?

I’m glad to hear Hikaru likes the dress and that she is showing off my new video.  I do wonder if the only reason for that is because she is in it.

Anyway, I’m in a good enough mood that I won’t go on about how Hikaru’s “new friend” is made by Mattel (the company that makes Barbie).  It’s not important enough to dwell on.
As for a new blouse, that could be possible in the future.

Mattel?  I shall not dwell on it either.  And there is no wrong doing in sharing a video that features my lovely visage.  Maybe if I appear in Anna’s videos more they will receive more positive feedback.

Anyway, I am off to join Cerise for a cup of tea while viewing more videos.  Be at peace.

Doll Owner’s Corner: The Face Up

First of the month, time for another Doll Owner’s Corner.  The time where I, the doll owner, can talk about anything at all without Hikaru butting in.

This month’s topic:  Face ups.

What is a face up?  It is essentially all the paint and such on a doll’s face.

Discussing BJD Face Ups

If you look closely, you can see that Hikaru does not have anything painted or drawn on her face.  I bought her blank, or without a face up.  This is common with ball jointed dolls, you buy them blank or with the company default face up.  I chose blank.

Mystic Kids Evelyn Ball Jointed Doll

This is what her company face up would have looked liked.  You can see more here.

So the question is why is it that despite the fact that I have had Hikaru for about seven months she is still blank?

The two options available are either paying someone else to paint on her or doing it myself.  Let’s deal with that first option.

There are only two people I know of who do commissions for face ups for bjds whom I would trust with my beloved Hikaru.  Both of them are out of state which means having to pack up my doll’s head and ship it to them hoping it makes it there and back unharmed.  This makes me nervous.

The second option is doing it myself.  I have actually already bought the materials I would need to do it myself.  Basic drawing supplies like watercolor pencils, non-oil soft pastels, brushes, etc., and of course a good sealant.  It’s that last thing that’s the problem.  That stuff is hazardous.  I still need to buy a respirator to use it safely and even then, it makes me nervous.

Both options make me nervous enough to put it off, though surprisingly the idea of shipping her head seems worse for me so the diy option may be the one I will eventually go with.  Which leads to the other problem.  How do I want Hikaru to look?  Also how do I get her to look like that?

Both these questions can only be answered through research and practice, both of which take more time.  Hence why so many months have and probably will continue to pass before Hikaru will finally get her face done.

In the meantime, I get to enjoy doing all that “research” via face up videos.  Here are a few I’ve been studying:
Enjoy!
