The majority of the text on this blog is written by Hikaru, a ball jointed doll. Try not to question it. The text written in pink font is commentary from Hikaru's human friend, Anna. Basically Hikaru does most of the writing and Anna keeps her from getting too out of hand.

Doll Owner’s Corner: Resin Colors

First of the month, time for another Doll Owner’s Corner.  When I, the doll owner, talk about anything at all.

This month’s topic:

Resin Colors

As mentioned several times before on this blog (see Doll Owner's Corner: What is a Bjd?), ball jointed dolls are made from resin, a beautiful porcelain-like plastic.

Resin can be made into wide variety of colors by adding pigments to it.  This means that companies can and do produce dolls in several different skin tones.

Discussing resin colors in ball jointed dolls and comparing pink resin in different doll companies.

The more common ones you see are white (like our deer friend, Shiro), “normal” and tan.  The “normal” is frequently split into “normal yellow” and “normal pink”, where the yellow is a sort of beige color and the pink is a pinkish color.

There are also the more fantasy colors like grey, blue, red, etc. sadly produced only by some companies.  And the companies that make dolls in those colors typically charge you more for them.  The same goes for tan dolls.  It’s because of the extra pigments needed to produce resin in those colors as well as extra time and effort.  You get what you pay for. :/

What I think is the beautiful thing about resin colors is the variety you get, and I don’t just mean the choice between pink or tan skin, etc.

Colors tend to vary from company to company due to differences in their resin, so a “normal skin” doll from one will usually look different from a “normal skin” doll from another company.  And differences can occur in dolls from the same company due to the age of the doll (since resin turns yellow as it ages) or variation in the batch of resin produced.

I have several examples of these in my own dolly household.

All my ball jointed dolls (except for Shiro) are “normal pink” or pink skin or whatever wording you prefer.  It’s my favorite resin color because it is so cute and it’s fun to see how different it looks in each company.

Discussing resin colors in ball jointed dolls and comparing pink resin in different doll companies, like Mystic Kids.

Or within the same company as with Sakura and Hikaru here, both are from Mystic Kids and bought about a year apart.

You can see here that Sakura looks pinker than Hikaru does.  In fact, Hikaru is so light in color that there have been days where I wondered if they sent me a white skin doll by mistake.

Discussing resin colors in ball jointed dolls and comparing pink resin in different doll companies. Like Doll Family A and Doll Family H.

Here is Yuki and Usagi, both made by Doll Family A and purchased from the same event.  Yuki is lighter than Usagi, who seems slightly more beige to me for a pink skin doll.

Discussing resin colors in ball jointed dolls and comparing pink resin in different doll companies.

Yuki’s body came separately from Doll Family H, which from what I’ve read is the sister company for Doll Family A.  I had assumed that the resin would match fairly well because of this, but you can see by Yuki’s arm on the left that it is definitely pinker and slightly darker.

Now here’s a fun little twist.  On the left is Yuna made by Doll Love, and on the right is Momoko made by Kids Sky.  Two different doll companies and the resin looks almost identical.

Discussing resin colors in ball jointed dolls and comparing pink resin in different doll companies.

I mean if you look really closely, you might see a slight difference.  It is so slight though that if you were looking to match bodies to make a hybrid doll I would recommend these two companies.

And that’s just what you see in my collection.

How about your dolls?  How do they compare to each other?  Let me know in the comments, and look forward to more fun with dolls in the future.

New Arrival: A Mystic Kids Doll Review

The newest member of our ball jointed doll family has arrived.  Anna ordered her from the Junky Spot, and three days later she arrived at our door.  Such efficient service.

New Arrival: A Mystic Kids Doll Review

Of course we were all eager to meet our newest companion.

New Arrival: A Mystic Kids Doll Review: The floating head wants to see too!

Even Usagi’s “friend”, the head (see Welcome Home, Doll Family-A Unboxing) is showing some excitement.

New Arrival: A Mystic Kids Doll Review: Straight from the Junky Spot.

There are numerous notices attached to the package warning of it’s fragile contents.

New Arrival: A Mystic Kids Doll Review: Opening the box.

And inside the initial box of course is the doll box.

New Arrival: A Mystic Kids Doll Review: What's inside the box?

Usagi is attempting to listen inside the box.

New Arrival: A Mystic Kids Doll Review: Random goodies inside.

Upon opening the box, we find a pair of socks of all things.

New Arrival: A Mystic Kids Doll Review: Attack on Titan socks?

The words “Attack on Titan” appear to be woven into the socks.  Anna says it is some sort of anime program.

New Arrival: A Mystic Kids Doll Review: With candy and My Little Pony!

We also uncover a My Little Pony figurine, an edible candy bracelet for a human…

New Arrival: A Mystic Kids Doll Review: Found a Tootsie Roll Pop in the box.

…This large candy lollipop…

New Arrival: A Mystic Kids Doll Review: Random goodies and business cards in the box.

…And several other trinkets as well as business cards for the shop.

This is a sort of trademark for the Junky Spot.  They include several treats and knick-knacks with every order.  Anna says it adds to the fun.

New Arrival: A Mystic Kids Doll Review: Unwrapping the bjd.

Now the moment we have been waiting for, time to uncover our precious new doll.

New Arrival: A Mystic Kids Doll Review

Here she is, and….wait, what is on her face?!

That’s right.  Unlike Hikaru and Usagi, I ordered the new doll with a face up (see Doll Owner's Corner: The Face Up).

New Arrival: A Mystic Kids Doll Review: It's a Mystic Kids Vanetta 1/6 scale or yosd sized bjd.

She is a Mystic Kids Vanetta, at 27 cm. tall she is a yosd sized or 1/6 scale ball jointed doll.

Anyway, the Junky Spot only had this doll in stock with a face up instead of blank, and the sale price was still pretty good anyway.

New Arrival: A Mystic Kids Doll Review: Mystic Kids Vanetta card.

She looks gorgeous although possibly a little more done up than I was expecting.  Her card here shows the default face up looking a little softer, more subtle.

I was a little surprised by the eyes too.  Bjds usually come with a free pair of eyes in a random color, but both Hikaru and Usagi came with blue.  So I half expected to end up with blue eyes again.  Imagine my surprise to see pink eyes with purple pupils.  They are really pretty though, so it’s okay.

This is information Anna neglected to mention to me.  What a shock indeed.  To see this tiny bjd, fresh out of the box with a full face of makeup.  Meanwhile I’ve been waiting over a year for a face up, but that’s besides the point.

But what’s done is done, now is the time to properly meet our new petite doll.

New Arrival: A Mystic Kids Doll Review: Meeting the other dolls.

“Are you a ghost?”

New Arrival: A Mystic Kids Doll Review: Meeting the other dolls.

“Is that why your face is colorless?”

New Arrival: A Mystic Kids Doll Review: Meeting the other dolls.

Oh, she’s so cute! :)”

Wow, your hair is so pretty!”

New Arrival: A Mystic Kids Doll Review: Meeting the other dolls.

“This is my friend. :)”

“He isn’t finished yet?  Can I play with him?  Can the ghost lady play too?”

New Arrival: A Mystic Kids Doll Review: Time to get dressed.

Enough of that, now it is time to get dressed.

Hikaru is using the New Doll dress.

It is a dress I made before I got her so she would have something to wear until I made something else.  She then passed it on to Usagi until I made Usagi some clothes.  Now this new doll gets to wear it, hence why it’s the “new doll” dress.

New Arrival: A Mystic Kids Doll Review: The dress is too big.

Sadly it’s a bit big on her.

It’s humongous, but it has become a tradition and it will do fine for now.  Anna will need to start sewing something more befitting immediately.

Mystic Kids Vanetta, 27 cm 1/6 scale or yosd sized ball jointed doll. Isn't she cute?!

In the meantime, we shall help her get acquainted with her new home.   I’m sure she will learn well by my example and will come to greatly admire me.

“Are you sure you aren’t a ghost?”

Yes, she will learn, but it may take some time.

Time and loads of patience.  Be at peace.

Of Bjd Hair: Another Wig Review and a Announcement

At long last, Usagi’s wig has finally arrived.  Anna ordered it without mentioning to either one of us until it was shipped.

Of Bjd Hair: Another Wig Review and a Announcement

But after waiting patiently for nearly a week, it finally arrived yesterday.  Poor Usagi was so anxious. (So was Hikaru.)

Of Bjd Hair: Another Wig Review and a Announcement

I must apologize for the awful lighting in the photos.  Usagi was much too excited to wait until daylight to open the package.

For My Doll Bjd Wig K-002 Review

Anyway here is the wig, carefully wrap in plastic and netting to protect it.

For My Doll Bjd Wig K-002 Review

The shop added their business card to the packaging.  The wig was purchased from Angelesque, which is where my wig came from (see It's Here at Last! or a Wig Review).  They service was impeccable as always.

For My Doll Bjd Wig K-002 Review

And here is the wig.

It was made by For My Doll and it’s  M K-002 in Pink Cream.  It’s a pleasant shade of pink, but somehow seems just a tad darker than the product photo.

For My Doll Bjd Wig K-002 Review

And the hair somehow seems slightly rough, at least compared to my own silky flowing tresses.

For My Doll Bjd Wig K-002 Review

Anyway, let us try it on…I mean on Usagi.

For My Doll Bjd Wig K-002 Review

It looks well enough on her in this horrid lighting.

For My Doll Bjd Wig K-002 Review

Though it seems she isn’t accustomed to having any sort of headwear.

For My Doll Bjd Wig K-002 Review

And the style seems a bit off on her.  Perhaps the bangs should be trimmed, at least it would help her vision.

For My Doll Bjd Wig K-002 Review

Now here is what it looks like during the day.  The color is much more flattering now.  I think it is a fine wig, though there are a few small flaws.  I’ll let Anna continue.

For My Doll Bjd Wig K-002 Review

Well, Hikaru is right about the color and the texture.  The color is slightly darker in person, but that probably has to do with variations with computer screens and such.

For My Doll Bjd Wig K-002 Review

The wig also doesn’t feel as soft as Hikaru’s wig.  I’m not sure if it’s just a difference in companies and their materials or possibly just the hair style.  This wig is curly while Hikaru’s hair is smooth and straight.

For My Doll Bjd Wig K-002 Review

Beyond that, it is a nice wig.  There aren’t any bald spots or noticeable thin areas.

For My Doll Bjd Wig K-002 Review

The only other issue I have is how it fits Usagi, both in size and style.

The wig is designed to fit 7-8 inch heads.  Usagi’s head is 18 cm. or about 7.8 in. and I’m afraid it’s a little loose.  Which is why she is wearing a balloon wig cap under it to keep it on (see The Incredible Balloon Wig Cap).

For My Doll Bjd Wig K-002 Review

As for style, I can’t help to wonder if the style suits her now that I can see it actually on her.  It’s one of the hard parts of shopping for wigs and clothes for dolls.  You can’t always try it on before buying.

But maybe with some additional styling, things will change.

For My Doll Bjd Wig K-002 after a bang trim.

Here’s how it looks with a trim.  Seems to suit her more already, and now she can see.

For My Doll Bjd Wig K-002 Review

I will probably have to go back and trim a little more to make it more natural looking, but this will do for now.

For My Doll Bjd Wig K-002 Review

And if we tie the curls to keep them out of her way, it seems to suit her a little more.

For My Doll Bjd Wig K-002 Review

Maybe this wig will work better than we thought, and Usagi really likes it anyway.

For My Doll Bjd Wig K-002 Review: Let's Switch Wigs!

I couldn’t agree more.  It looks charming on her.

“Hikaru, I want to see what it will look like you!”

For My Doll Bjd Wig K-002 Review: Wigs Switched!

Well I was a little curious what it would look like.  (She was dying to try it on.)

Hikaru wearing a For My Doll wig in Pink Cream

As expected, it looks glorious on me.  Although I do prefer my own wigs, curls do suit me so well.  Maybe if Anna found a suitable set of curlers….

Usagi wearing a white Dollzone wig

My wig actually looks fairly adorable on Usagi, just to try on of course.  I’m certain if left on longer, Usagi would tangle it up horrendously.

Anyway, Usagi has finally received her wig, but that wasn’t the only package we are waiting on.  It is time for the grand announcement,  we are expecting a new doll!

And this time Anna didn’t spring it on me out of the blue.  We have discussed it often amongst ourselves.  She purchased the little one from the Junky Spot, the same store she purchased me.  Not just that, the doll is made by the same company as myself, Mystic Kids.  They are currently having a sale which presented the perfect opportunity to add to our little family.

Now to reveal which doll will be arriving shortly at our door step.  May I present:

The Mystic Kids 27 cm. Vanetta

As with myself and Usagi, she shall arrive without clothing or hair.  And, Oh dear, she is scheduled to arrive today.  So if you will please excuse me, I must prepare for her arrival.  So much to do with so little time.
